During the stainless steel processing and production process, acid is used for surface treatment, which will produce pickling sludge, which contains heavy metal elements such as chromium, nickel, and iron, so it needs to be treated and recovered. The main method for treating stainless steel pickling sludge is to leach it, transfer the valuable metals into the solution, and then use solvent extraction for separation and recovery.

The metal extraction and recovery in the pickling sludge leachate can use di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (P204) as the extractant and use CWL-M centrifugal extractor for solvent extraction to separate heavy metal elements from the sulfuric acid leachate of stainless steel pickling sludge to achieve the purpose of waste recycling.

P204 extractant is an acidic phosphorus extractant, which exists in the form of a dimer molecule (HA)2 in a non-polar solvent. After extraction, the metal ions enter the organic phase in the form of a complex. The extraction ability of acidic extractants to extract metal ions is closely related to the pH at equilibrium. According to the extraction principle, when P204 extracts metal ions, hydrogen ions exchange with metal ions, which will reduce the pH of the aqueous phase. Therefore, P204 is usually subjected to saponification pretreatment during extraction. As the saponification rate of P204 increases, the extraction rates of the three metal ions all show an upward trend. Therefore, increasing the saponification rate of the extractant can not only improve the extraction ability of the organic phase, but also improve the extraction separation coefficient between metal ions, which is beneficial to the separation of metals.

The loaded organic phase obtained under suitable conditions is back-extracted with sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid solution can protonate the extractant P204, thereby exchanging the metal ions loaded therein into the aqueous phase. Using P204 as the extractant, the solvent extraction process can be used to treat the sulfuric acid leaching liquid of stainless steel pickling sludge to remove heavy metal ions such as Cr3+, Fe2+, and Ni2+. This method can effectively separate chromium from nickel and iron and effectively treat acidic wastewater containing heavy metals Cr3+ and Ni2+.
