Ammonium molybdate is white or light green crystals with a relative density of 2.498. It is soluble in water, acid and alkali, but insoluble in alcohol. Ammonium molybdate is an important molybdate salt and an important raw material for the production of molybdenum powder and molybdenum metal products. It is also widely used in chemical reagents, catalysts, flame retardants and drugs.

According to the content and quality of molybdenum in the ore, molybdenum ore can be divided into three categories: primary ore, by-product ore and symbiotic product ore. Primary ore is mainly the extraction of molybdenite; by-product ore is the extraction and recovery of copper-containing ore; and symbiotic product ore is the simultaneous extraction of molybdenite and copper-containing ore.

Molybdenum ore needs to be mined, and the mined ore is crushed and ground into fine particles to release the molybdenite from the gangue. The metal ions are separated by flotation leaching process, and then the molybdenum concentrate is roasted to produce molybdenum roasted sand. If other products are needed, more processes are required, and the overall operation process is relatively complicated.

The process flow of solvent extraction of ammonium molybdate mainly includes three processes: roasting, leaching and solvent extraction. In actual operation, the nickel-molybdenum ore is first oxidized by oxidative roasting to convert metal sulfides such as nickel and molybdenum in the nickel-molybdenum ore into oxides. At the same time, the gas generated by the reaction is introduced into a saturated sodium carbonate solution to prepare sodium pyrosulfite. Then, under the condition of introducing active oxygen, molybdenum is selectively leached and extracted with a strong base (NaOH) to achieve the purpose of separating molybdenum from nickel. Then, MgCl is added to purify and remove impurities, and the molybdenum in the leachate is purified by solvent extraction to prepare ammonium molybdate.
